88% A Place at the Table

All Critics (49) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (43) | Rotten (6)

You don't have to be a fan of info-graphics in social-justice docs to be troubled by one showing that the price of processed food has decreased in almost exact proportion to the rise in cost of fresh fruits and vegetables.

"A Place at the Table" presents a shameful truth that should leave viewers dismayed and angry: This nation has more than enough food for all its people, yet millions of them are hungry.

One thing is clear from "A Place at the Table": You cannot answer the question "Why are people hungry?," without also asking "Why are people poor?"

It specifically addresses our country's hunger crisis. But it also speaks to larger hungers. Hungers for independence, a dignified life, a better chance for ones children-in short, the American dream. See it and weep.

As rich as we are as a nation - still - many of our citizens are, at best, malnourished. One in six says they regularly don't have enough to eat.

It deserves to be seen, along with "Food, Inc.," "King Corn" and other muckraking food docs of recent years.

Jacboson and Silverbush know how to make this potentially unpleasant news palatable and inspiring.

A documentary about the shocking extent of hunger in America, affecting 1 in 4 children.

Provides plenty of moving case studies...[but] it's most useful for its prismatic look at the problem of American hunger, examining the problem's recent history, its root causes...and its inextricability from other national crises...

Hunger in America, seen through the eyes of its victims, with an emphasis on children. Sobering documentary addresses a shameful problem.

As moving as the real lives are, for a film clearly intending to be a call for action, hunger cries out for more journalism and not just depressing stories and statistics.

A Place at the Table makes a strong case that hunger for one is a problem for all.

Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush explore the surprisingly difficult obstacles to ending a situation where about 1 child out of 4 faces insecurity over where to get a meal.

A Place at the Table may bring to light a hunger epidemic the entire United States faces, but it also casts an even darker shadow on an already tainted world.

Powerful docu explores the problem of hunger in America.

An explosive investigative documentary about the injustices emanating from agricultural capitalism, how it's more about who gets to define what food is, and exactly who hugely profits from it.

...joined by an eclectic array of advocates and advisors to hit home the fact that, daily, millions of Americans go hungry.

Fine but conventional documentary on the problem of hunger in contemporary America.

Watch out, Harry Potter: New invisibility cloak (mostly) works

Jealous of Harry Potter's invisibility cloak? Yours could be coming soon. A new cloaking device doesn't work on visible light yet, but it makes objects invisible to microwave light.

By Clara Moskowitz,?Live Science / March 26, 2013

Physicists have created a real-life prototype of an invisibility cloak like the one featured in the "Harry Potter" books and films.

A miniature version of Harry Potter's invisibility cloak now exists, though it works only in microwave light, and not visible light, so far.

Still, it's a nifty trick, and the physicists who've created the new cloak say it's a step closer to realizing the kind of invisibility cloak that could hide a person in broad daylight.

The invention is made of a new kind of material called a metascreen, created from strips of copper tape attached to a flexible polycarbonate film. The copper strips are only 66 micrometers (66 millionths of a meter) thick, while the polycarbonate film is 100 micrometers thick, and the two are combined in a diagonal fishnet pattern.

The creation is a departure from previous attempts to create invisibility cloaks, which have aimed to bend light rays around an object so that they don't scatter, or reflect off it, a technique that relies on so-called bulk metamaterials. Instead, the new cloak uses a technique called mantle cloaking to cancel out light waves that bounce off the shielded object so that none survive to reach an observer's eye.?

"When the scattered fields from the cloak and the object interfere, they cancel each other out and the overall effect is transparency and invisibility at all angles of observation," study co-author Andrea Alu, a physicist at the University of Texas at Austin, said in a statement.

In lab tests, Alu and his colleagues successfully hid a 7-inch-long (18 centimeters) cylindrical rod from view in microwave light. They said the same technology should be able to cloak oddly shaped and asymmetrical objects, too.
?
?"The advantages of the mantle cloaking over existing techniques are its conformability, ease of manufacturing and improved bandwidth," Alu said. "We have shown that you don't need a bulk metamaterial to cancel the scattering from an object ? a simple patterned surface that is conformal to the object may be sufficient and, in many regards, even better than a bulk metamaterial."

In principle, the same kind of cloak could be used to hide objects in the visible range of light, as well, though it may work only for teensy-tiny objects, at least at first.
?
?"In fact, metascreens are easier to realize at visible frequencies than bulk metamaterials and this concept could put us closer to a practical realization," Alu said. "However, the size of the objects that can be efficiently cloaked with this method scales with the wavelength of operation, so when applied to optical frequencies we may be able to efficiently stop the scattering of micrometer-sized objects."

The invention isn't just a novelty to thrill Harry Potter fans and aspiring spies. The researchers say it could have practical applications down the line, such as in noninvasive sensing devices or in biomedical instruments. They described their device in a paper published in the March 26 issue of the New Journal of Physics.

Superstars break record in bench press on SmackDown

Mark Henry and Ryback broke the NFL scouting combine record for the 225-pound bench press with a stunning 53 repetitions each during a?sold-out television taping of SmackDown in Hershey, Pa., Tuesday night.

The World?s Strongest Man crushed the record of 51 reps, set by Justin Ernest at the 1999 NFL combine. His count nearly stood at 54, but WWE referee Scott Armstrong elected not to count the final lift.

View more incredible strong man records?| Watch Henry?s massive feats of strength

?[Henry] hit the 53,? the seasoned official said, explaining why he didn?t count the last attempt, ?but when he was about to hit 54, he couldn?t get it all the way up and then he racked it. So the official mark stands at 53.?

Although Henry?s feat was truly incredible, Ryback looked ready to break the newly established record with 54 reps. After tying The World?s Strongest Man, however, his WrestleMania adversary prevented him from going further by pushing the bar down upon him. Sports Stars Of The '90s: Where Are They Now?

Bleacher Report:

Just because athletes retire and aren't on television anymore constantly reminding you of their very existence doesn't mean they simply cease to exist.

That being said, let's take a look at some very random sports starts from the '90s and see what they were doing then and what they are doing now.

I?m going to live-tweet THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART II. I?m not well. Follow or mute #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Hope there?s a ?previously on?? ? the labyrinthine plot is tough to follow. Bella loves Edward, but also loves Jacob, right? #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Bella is a vampire with super-vision. This explains why the Cullen household is so clean. They see every particle of dust. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Bella and Edward?s daughter is called Rednoseday, if you say it fast with a cold? #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Here?s a ?running super-fast through a forest? sequence that is begging geeks to insert a few STAR WARS speeder bikes. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Vegetarian vampire Edward is okay with Bella hunting a deer? Shaky morals, that guy. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Why doesn?t Edward just scream ?FUCK OFF, already!? whenever Jacob turns up? Ultimate gooseberry. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Oh my God.. what is that-that-that? THING they call a baby? #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

?You nicknamed my daughter after the Loch Ness Monster!?? (I just need to quote #breakingdawn2 for laughs this time out.)Dan Owen

Bella and Edward have been given a cottage as a starter home. This doesn?t reflect MY frustrations with the property ladder. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Love scene. Only people in movies grip the bed sheets. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

The sex was more epic between Jeff Goldblum and Emma Thompson in THE TALL GUY. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

If you have an ex-boyfriend who claims he's "imprinted" on your baby, which excuses him still hanging around, call the cops. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Here comes Officer Dewey. I mean, Charlie. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Kristen Stewart always looks very attractive in the movies, but in real life... God, what am I saying? Yeah, still would. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Awww. Charlie meets Rednoseday for the first time. Somehow isn't freaked by her CGI face. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

I recall new vampires being crazy and unpredictable in an earlier movie, but Bella seems pretty normal. No internal logic. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Sharon from LOST has arrived, so clearly the overall standard of acting is about to increase. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

The world's third favourite Sheen has arrived! Well, fourth if you include household polishing product 'Mr Sheen'. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Simultaneously beheading someone while you rip off their arms is kind of cool. If it's not happening to you. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

I picked a good day to watch #breakingdawn2 because it's snowy outside where I live, too. And I'm also shirtless with bloodshot eyes.Dan Owen

Lots of good-looking people standing around in the snow, talking bullshit with grave severity in their voices. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Is that the psycho soldier from THE PACIFIC who can control the elements? #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Half the time the camera is just filming lots of people, with the stupid voiceover carrying 80% of the storytelling. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

"It won't come to a fight." -- I bet it comes to a fight. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Suddenly these vampires are more like bloody X-Men! #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

In its favour, #breakingdawn2 has ethnic diversity well covered. I'm surprised we haven't met any Inuit vampires yet.Dan Owen

Bella is apparently a shield. Well, it beats being Jacob's beard. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Rapidly-ageing Rednoseday must have cost them a fortune in baby clothes and shoes. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

I made the mistake of looking at the runtime. I'm only halfway through. 20 mins of plot has happened. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

There's an alumnus of THE WIRE in this? No words. No words. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Who is that bearded guy who isn't Guy Pearce? He's no Guy Pearce. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

They're sitting around a campfire telling stories. Let's hope they're better than #breakingdawn2's story.Dan Owen

Jacob is the muscled bodyguard/nanny to his ex's daughter she had with his love rival? The man is a doormat. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Here comes a battle scene that's already reminding me of the one in GOLDEN COMPASS. Oh, goodie. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

If good actors weren't allowed children to impress, we'd perhaps be spared movies like #breakingdawn2. #sterilizeactorsDan Owen

How can they hear what Michael Sheen is saying? He's stood about 600m away. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

I want Sheen's unearthly cackle as my ringtone, to perturb early morning commuters. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

The Swede from #HellonWheels is playing a vampire, as he did on #TrueBlood. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Wilhelm Scream. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Credit where it's due, this mass brawl is a lot of fun. Apparently it wasn't in the book, which makes perfect sense. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

What's this? Actual deaths and a feeling of... drama? #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Hah, cop-out to appease the book fans. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

Oh yes, let's relive the saccharine rubbish that's befallen a generation. #flashbacks #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

I wasn't on first name terms with ANY of the people the credits are running through. I just relied on my own nicknames. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

This is hilarious. Only mild recollection of these people I spent FOUR movies watching. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

End credits. I'm imagining lots of crying from the cinema audience, and braindead fathers trying to drag their kids outside. #breakingdawn2Dan Owen

What's this? My followers actually went UP while live-tweeting #breakingdawn2?Dan Owen

Immigration Reform Guest Worker Provision Hits Another Roadblock

WASHINGTON -- Immigration talks in the Senate snagged Friday when Republican members of the "gang of eight" rejected another compromise on the future flow of foreign workers, according to the AFL-CIO labor federation.

Senators said they had hoped to agree on reform by the end of the week, before a two-week recess takes them out of Washington. Other issues, even contentious ones such as border security and a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, have mostly been resolved. But squabbling over worker visas continues.

The latest problem is how to decide the future flow of workers that won't disrupt wages of American workers. Talks between the AFL-CIO and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over guest worker provisions have stalled over the issue. After Republicans senators in the gang of eight -- Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) -- rejected other proposals, AFL-CIO spokesman Jeff Hauser said Democrats offered a compromise: adopting language from an existing law for another type of visa, the H2-B. "Visas will be issued only when the employment of foreign workers will not adversely affect the wages and working conditions of similarly situated workers in the United States," that law reads.

The aim is to avoid driving down wages for American workers by maintaining the existing H2-B mechanism that sets wages for new workers.

Republicans turned down that proposal, Hauser said, surprising Democrats, who believed other elements of the future flow agreement had addressed GOP concerns.

"This is not just looking a gift horse in the mouth, but like looking at every tooth," Hauser said.

AFL-CIO campaign manager Tom Snyder told TPM earlier Friday that "the only thing that?s remaining here is that the business community wants to set wage rates for the new visa holders that are below the federal poverty line."

The offices of the senators declined to discuss the negotiations. The Chamber of Commerce did not respond to a request for comment.

The chamber and the AFL-CIO agreed earlier this year that businesses would be able to hire low-skilled immigrant workers if it was determined that no American workers were willing or available. They proposed a separate organization that would determine the needs of business, so flows of guest workers were flexible to the needs of the market. The gang of eight framework also called for guest workers to be allowed into the country to fill jobs Americans did not fill.

Earlier in the day, McCain told Politico he would not consider hypotheticals of whether a business-labor disagreement could derail the process.

"We have bumps every five minutes, but I am still, as I?ve always said, guardedly optimistic," McCain said.

Invasive species: Understanding the threat before it's too late

Mar. 22, 2013 ? Catching rides on cargo ships and fishing boats, many invasive species are now covering our shorelines and compromising the existence of our native marine life.

In a study published in Ecology Letters, Northeastern University Prof. David Kimbro and his team examine what factors allow some invasive species to survive in their new environments and others to fail.

Why we should care

Once invasive species arrive in their new location, they begin multiplying, and in some cases, overpowering the local marine life. This can have a very strong impact on our ecosystems and businesses, such as fisheries.

Understanding what makes these invaders thrive or fail in their new environments is not only key to preventing the collapse of local marine life, but also figuring out ways to make some invaders work to benefit their new locations. "Not all invasive species are bad. In fact, we need some of them to succeed. But invasions are certainly a double-edged sword because many invasions cost us a lot in terms of money and natural heritage."

Prof. Kimbro, currently stationed at Northeastern University's Marine Science Center in Nahant, collected synthesized research on marine diversity reports published from 1997-2012 to better understand the specific biological and environmental properties that allow invasive species to succeed or fail.

"For the past 15 years, marine scientists have conducted a lot of experiments that have taught us a lot about specific invasions in many different places. But unlike terrestrial scientists, no one had pieced all of these unique stories together to see if they collectively tell us a general and useful message. And until we see cattle swimming and kudzu growing in the ocean, we can't just recycle the messages from land studies and use them to manage our coastal systems."

Pistorius brothers both have court dates next week

(AP Photo/Themba Hadebe, File)

(AP) ? Oscar Pistorius' appeal against his bail conditions will be heard on Thursday, a day after the culpable homicide trial of older brother Carl begins, a family lawyer told The Associated Press on Friday.

Advocate Kenny Oldwadge said they had confirmation from Pretoria's North Gauteng High Court that the appeal is scheduled for March 28 at the High Court, meaning the brothers will both likely have legal proceedings on the same day.

The Olympic athlete, charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last month, is challenging travel restrictions and having to report twice a week to a police station, among other conditions.

Oldwadge and prosecutors said Pistorius ? who hasn't been seen publicly since he was granted bail ? was not required to appear in court for the appeal.

The next part of the 26-year-old double-amputee runner's high-profile case ? which continues to grip South Africans and much of the world's media ? will now take place while brother Carl is in another court to defend himself against a culpable homicide charge for alleged negligent driving in the death of a 36-year-old woman in a road collision in 2008.

Carl was going to trial on Wednesday and Thursday in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court, south of Johannesburg, prosecutors said. The 28-year-old Carl denies the charges and Oldwadge said he would lead Carl's defense at the trial.

The concurrent dates for the Pistorius brothers had also stretched the family's legal team, Oldwadge said, and provided them with significant logistical problems.

"We didn't suggest it (the date for Oscar's appeal) but we were forced into it because of the need to get the appeal heard as soon as possible," Oldwadge said.

He said there was "no need" for Oscar to appear in court.

The multiple Paralympic champion's legal team filed an appeal against some of his bail conditions on March 7, objecting to him being not allowed to travel outside of South Africa even though a magistrate said he was not a flight risk when granting him 1 million rand ($108,000) bail last month. They're also challenging the alcohol ban and that Pistorius cannot speak with any residents at the Silverwoods Country Estate, where he shot Steenkamp dead in his house the early hours of Feb. 14.

Pistorius' lawyers say he should be able to consult with residents to be able to prepare his defense. They also object to the ruling that he has to report twice a week to the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria, where he was held after his arrest.

Pistorius denies murdering his girlfriend and says he shot her by mistake fearing an intruder was in his home. Prosecutors say he killed her intentionally following a loud argument in the early hours of Valentine's Day.

State prosecutors also believe they have a culpable homicide case against Carl, who they argue was driving negligently, National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Medupe Simasiku told the AP on Friday.

Simasiku said the older Pistorius brother was driving a Ford Ranger SUV in March 2008 when he collided with a female motorcyclist. The woman, Marietjie Barnard, died in a hospital.

"According to the investigation we have, there is a case against Pistorius," Simasiku said.

Simasiku, who is the spokesman for the prosecution in both Pistorius cases, said the scheduling of proceedings in both brothers' cases in the same week was not intentional.

"(Carl's trial) was scheduled way before Oscar," he said. "People may think ... that we were trying to run them concurrently."

(AP Photo/Steven Senne)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Darden Restaurants' third-quarter net income dropped 18 percent, as it dealt with soft sales at Red Lobster but the performance still beat Wall Street's expectations.

The Orlando, Fla., company said Friday that sales at its Olive Garden, Red Lobster and LongHorn Steakhouse restaurants open at least a year fell a combined 4.6 percent.

This figure is a key gauge of a restaurant operator's performance because it excludes results at store recently opened or closed.

Darden Restaurants Inc. has been struggling to make its brands relevant again as diners increasingly head to chains like Chipotle and Panera, where they feel they're getting restaurant-quality food without paying as much. As it looks for ways to catch up to shifting trends, Red Lobster this week started testing a "pay-at-the-counter" concept at two location near the its headquarters.

For the three months ended Feb. 24, Darden earned $134.4 million, or $1.02 per share. That's down from $164.1 million, or $1.25 per share, a year earlier.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of $1.01 per share.

Revenue rose 5 percent to $2.26 billion from $2.16 billion, matching Wall Street's view.

Revenue for the specialty restaurant group surged 61 percent, buoyed by the addition of some Yard House restaurants, as well as new restaurants for The Capital Grille, Bahama Breeze and Seasons 52.

Revenue at Red Lobster dropped 6 percent as it contended with higher expenses and weaker sales at its locations in the U.S. open at least a year. Olive Garden revenue edged up slightly and revenue for LongHorn Steakhouse climbed 6.9 percent as both chains took in money from new restaurants.

Darden said that bad winter weather hurt sales at some of its restaurants. Sales at Red Lobster restaurants open in the U.S. at least a year declined 6.6 percent in the quarter. The figure fell 4.1 percent for Olive Garden locations in the U.S. and dropped 1.6 percent for LongHorn Steakhouse.

The company reaffirmed its fiscal 2013 earnings forecast of $3.06 to $3.22 per share. Analysts predict earnings of $3.17 per share.

It still anticipates revenue will climb 6 percent to 7 percent. Based on the prior year's revenue of $8 billion, this implies about $8.48 billion to $8.56 billion.

Wall Street expects revenue of $8.52 billion.

Darden's board also declared a quarterly dividend of 50 cents per share. The dividend will be paid on May 1 to shareholders of record on April 10.

Darden Restaurants shares rose 54 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $49.50 in midday trading Friday. They have traded in a 52-week range of $44.11 to $57.93.

So how come so many people don?t even know what RSS is?!

In my article ?Web Content ? 6 Free Tools to Generate Great Ideas (and All From Google)??I recommend Google Reader. In fact I?ve been recommending Google Reader to all my clients and in any courses or talks I do, on any element of online marketing, because content creation and coming up with ideas for content on a regular basis is important in getting visitors to your site and building community on all of your online marketing channels, especially social media.

Not too long ago, I read that Google was probably going to shut down Google Reader and many were forcasting the death of RSS, but it wasn?t until 13th March 2013 that Google confirmed that Google Reader will be retired on July 1st 2013.

I shouldn?t be surprised because the majority of the people I mention Google Reader to haven?t heard of it, and have no clue what an RSS feed is.

What is an RSS Feed?

RSS stands for ?rich site summary? or ?really simple syndication?, depending on which source you follow. RSS is data generated from a website, as a ?feed?, with the most recent content in a format, either. rss or .xml, so that this fresh content can be sent out to subscribers, search engines and applications to provide an aggregation of recently published articles.

RSS feeds have been commonly available on news sites and blogs for years, but are available on most sites these days as more and more sites are developed with content management systems (CMS), like WordPress or Joomla, that generate an RSS feed by default or using a standard add-on.

Subscribing to an RSS Feed

Many sites promote their RSS feeds with a link using either the RSS icon (see right; the icon may be other shapes or colours) or just the text ?subscribe?. When you click on the link you can choose to subscribe via a number of applications such as feed readers (like Google Reader), news aggregators (like My Yahoo or NewsGator) or email. Some sites also allow you to subscribe to comments left on the site.

RSS Feed Subscription

Subscribing to a site?s RSS Feed

Subscribing to an RSS Feed versus an Email Marketing (Mailing) List

email subscription form

Subscribing to an Email Marketing List NOT an RSS Feed

When you subscribe to an RSS feed via email, you are not subscribing to the site?s email marketing, or mailing, list. ?You will get an email from the feed management application (more on that below), not the site owner, each time a new article is published on the site. ?When you subscribe, or opt-in, to a site?s own mailing list, you will get emails from the site owner on whatever timescale they determine (often weekly or monthly), not necessarily each time new content is published. You can decide which type of subscription suits you best or you may subscribe to both.

Viewing RSS feeds in a Feed Reader or News Aggregator

rss feed categories

My RSS Feed Categories in Feedly

Feed readers and news aggregators are applications that provide a way to view all of the feeds you subscribe to in one place. ?You may choose to use a ?desktop? application, one you download and run on your device, or ?web based? that you use through your web browser (like Google Reader or Feedly). When you subscribe to a feed with one of these applications on your device, or as an extension to your favorite web browser, the subscription will be automatically added to the application (or perhaps after confirmation from you).

Many feed readers/aggregators have features so you can save, favorite or share the articles; keep track of what is read and unread; and mobile apps that sync with your desktop or web app so that you can use on the go. You can organize your subscriptions into categories to make it easier to scan through. ?Some apps organize them for you based on the data it picks up from the feed.

Some aggregators will also integrate feeds of your social media channels if you prefer to view all in one place, rather than go from social media channel to channel.?Flipboard is an app only for mobile devices (including tablets and some Kindles) where you can view your social media channels and feeds in one very easy and visually appealing way. (Google didn?t put much effort into Reader recently so had not kept up with its competitors in style and function.)

flipboard

Other popular Feed Readers

  • Feedly?is my new feed reader of choice. There is a web based version and a mobile app and I use both extensively. ?It syncs with Google Reader so easy to make the transition over. ?I also use the Chrome browser extension so, if I find an interesting site as I browse, I can click to subscribe to it into my Feedly.
  • FeedDemon is an favorite of many early fans of feed readers, but this Windows only app has an outdated look and feel.
  • NewsBlur?has free and premium services.
  • I used to follow my most important sources via my personalised iGoogle page, but this is going to be retired in November 2013.
  • You can add feeds to many social media dashboards, like Hootsuite or NetVibes.

RSS Feeds versus Social Media Feeds

You may be wondering, ?Why would I need to subscribe to an RSS feed if you are already following a company/site on Twitter or Facebook, where they would post their newest content?? With a Feed reader you can view all of the most recent content in one place, not mixed in with other comments and posts by your friends, at the time you want to. ?On social media channels the news feed moves along during the day and you will miss new content posted when you are not online. Most feed readers/aggregators have tools so that you can share the links on your social media channels. (See the Flipboard screenshot above.)

How You Can Provide an RSS Feed of Your Website

An RSS feed for your own site is the easiest way to get your newest content pushed out to search engines and other sites and social media channels as quickly, and easily, as possible.

If you are using any of the popular content management systems, like WordPress, your site will have an RSS feed by default. ?The default feed is often very basic so you may want to use a feed management application, like Google?s Feedburner, which allows you to offer subscriptions via email, to show a formatted version of your feed on other sites, etc.

With the demise of Reader, many are wondering when Feedburner will be retired as well. Inactivity on the app?s blog and the fact that the stats provided for the app have been down for awhile, could be a sign that this will happen sooner rather than later.?Click here for a list of alternatives to Feedburner.?(I?ve not tried any, but will probably be checking these out myself shortly.)

If your site doesn?t have an RSS feed produced by default you may need a web developer to set one up for your or move to a ?new or better content management system.

Other uses of RSS Feeds

  • TwitterFeedTo import content into your site or an app, you can add a feed of news or other content from a relevant site.
  • If you are providing great content on your website, other site owners may want to import your content to include on their sites or include in a Twitter or other sort of feed. Many organisations (trade organisations, chambers of commerce, regional bodies, etc.) include content from members? own sites which is pulled in via feeds.
  • Frustrated that Twitter didn?t have a ?save for later? button, I created a feed of my favorited tweets so that I can view later in Google Reader when I had more time to read full articles.
  • The application I use for back-ups offers the ability to get notifications of the status of your back-ups via an RSS feed. Many apps offer various reports as RSS feeds.
  • I set up a feed for the service notice posts for any application that is critical for work, like my CRM, that sends an email when there is a post, because I don?t want to chance missing the message in the business of my other feeds or social media posts.
  • TwitterFeed is a great app to create a feed your new posts to your social media channels. ?I am not usually a fan of autoposting, but I do feel this is a great tool, as long as you keep in mind how the posts will come out when setting this up.

Are you a fan of Google Reader, or
are you one of the many that had never heard of RSS until now?

Any recommendations for alternatives to Google Reader, or
interesting ways to use RSS differently?

Shutterfly sues to shut down Kodak photo app

(Reuters) - Photo service Shutterfly Inc has sued to shut down an Eastman Kodak Co app that lets users purchase photo albums made from pictures stored on Facebook Inc's social media network, according to court documents.

Shutterfly bought the Kodak Gallery online photo business for $23.8 million last year, and as part of the deal Kodak agreed not to set up a duplicate business, according to court documents.

Shutterfly said in a complaint filed on Friday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan that the "My Kodak Moments App" violates the sale agreement by setting up a competing business.

The app allows users to choose photos on Facebook to create an album which is then printed and sent to the consumer.

The complaint also alleged it is powered by the same technology that powered the business that Shutterfly purchased.

A Kodak spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Kodak filed for bankruptcy early last year.

It said on Friday it had closed on its $848 million finance package that helps prepare it to exit bankruptcy in the middle of this year. The company plans to focus on its commercial imaging business after it reorganizes.

The case is In re: Eastman Kodak Co et al, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-10202.

(AP Photo/Carrie Antlfinger)

(AP) ? A decade ago, fur rancher Bob Zimbal had about 34,000 mink at his three southeastern Wisconsin farms. He was in survival mode, struggling to compete with farmers producing cheaper pelts overseas. Then the recession hit and prices tumbled again.

But Zimbal came through the hard times and prospered. These days he's got 54,000 breeding females, 26 miles worth of cages and an on-site feed plant that towers over the snow-covered fields along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

His business is no longer about serving the rich and famous in Hollywood and New York. Now the main market is China, where demand for higher quality furs among the newly wealthy has helped push pelt prices to record levels and shielded U.S. farmers from the sluggish economy. Animal rights activists, who have worked to make fur unfashionable in the U.S., are turning their attention to Asia, but thus far, American fur farmers are reaping greater profits.

"The international market has protected U.S. producers," Zimbal said. "Right now, in China, their consumption is growing faster than the supply. ... They're driving the market right now."

The U.S. fur industry has been a volatile one over the past 15 years. Mink pelt prices sank to about $25 each in 1998 and hovered around $35 over the next few years as farmers in other countries found cheaper ways to produce fur.

Dozens of American fur farms went out of business. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 440 farms were operating in the United States in 1998; by 2005, there were 275. In 2011, the year for which the latest statistics are available, there were 268. Of the 3.1 million pelts they produced, a third came from Wisconsin farms.

Zimbal, a third-generation mink farmer, scrimped through the hard times. Some workers quit for better-paying jobs after he couldn't afford raises, and members of his family took over their chores, feeding the mink and cleaning cages. Zimbal nursed old equipment instead of replacing it, and when he had to swap something out, he bought used instead of new.

"We bought used pick-up trucks and used tractors," he said. "You've got to lean down as much as you can. We did what we had to do to survive."

Prices rebounded in 2006 and 2007, but then the recession struck. Americans struggling to hold on to their jobs and homes stopped shopping for furs. U.S. retail prices hit a 10-year low in 2009.

Enter China. The nation has become the largest fur producer and processor in the world. Chinese consumers flush with cash bought more than half of the fur coats sold globally in 2010, according to the China Leather Industry Association. Chinese fur retail sales for 2012 haven't been officially tallied yet, but the China Chamber of Commerce of Foodstuffs and Native Produce predicts they could top $6 billion.

The country's homegrown furs, however, have been marked by low quality resulting from in-breeding, high feed costs and ensuing poor nutrition, according to a 2010 report from the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Survey.

As a result, Chinese manufacturers have turned to foreign farmers for high-quality pelts. China imported nearly $126 million worth of U.S. mink pelts last year, making it the second most lucrative mink export market for American fur farmers behind South Korea, according to FAS. The North American Fur Auction, which touts itself as the largest fur wholesale auction house in North America, said nearly three quarters of the 700-plus buyers who attended its Toronto auction in February were Chinese.

"The fur coat happens to be one of the trappings of success. ... People in the Far East and Europe see American TV and see us wearing it, they all want to wear it," said Michael Whelan, executive director of Fur Commission USA.

Zhang Yiren, a 25-year-old medical magazine employee, tried on a fur coat in a Shanghai shopping mall recently with her parents.

"I have had two fur coats and bought them for myself," she said. "The angora one cost me 1,600 yuan ($250), and I love the style. It is beautiful and keeps me warm."

Shoppers like Zhang have helped send U.S. wholesale prices surging; mink pelts averaged a record $94 in 2011, up from $41 in 2008, according to the USDA.

The boom has attracted the attention of animal rights activists. Most opposition to fur sales in China has been led by foreign groups, but homegrown activism is growing and some Chinese celebrities have publicly rejected fur, including Hong Huang, a magazine publisher and commentator, TV star Sun Li and talk show host Li Jing.

"Every life on earth is precious ? not only human beings but animals too. So I hope people could say no to fur," said Sun in a video posted on the popular Sina Web portal by the animal rights group PETA. "It's really not that beautiful when you sacrifice others' lives for your beautiful look."

But the anti-fur efforts haven't had much effect thus far. Industry groups predict robust growth in China, perhaps by as much as 14 percent per year, in the near future.

That bodes well for U.S. fur farmers like Zimbal.

"In 2009, when the whole world economy was really poor, we still had a profitable year," Zimbal said. "That's when it became clear that China was for real . . . any business that is exporting into China is doing very well."

Small Business Web Ad Dollars - AllThingsD

cash registerHey, Google! And Yahoo, and Yelp, and Twitter and Facebook and every other Web company that says it wants to sell ads to mom-and-pop shops: Try harder.

So says Boston Consulting Group, out with a new report that shows only 3 percent of small-business ad dollars going online.

The numbers come from a survey conducted last fall of 550 small companies, and shouldn?t come as a complete surprise to anyone who has watched the Web guys try to break into the market for many, many years.

With the notable exception of Groupon and other daily deal companies, most of the Internet guys like to advertise their advertising on the Internet. And their platonic ideal for a transaction is the self-serve model, where humans never have to talk to each other. Meanwhile, lots of traditional business still gets done in analog form, via phone calls and feet on the street.

When small businesses do spend their money, Google still gets the most, says BCG, which ranks the popularity of other outlets this way: ?Other search engines, Yelp, Facebook, Yahoo! Local, YP.com (formerly yellowpages.com), Twitter, LinkedIn, and Superpages.com.?

Woman portrayed in 'The Natural' dies at 83

AP

Ruth Steinhagen, then 19, writes notes for her life history in Cook County Jail in Chicago in this June 18, 1949 photo.

By Don Babwin, The Associated Press

CHICAGO -- She inspired a novel and a movie starring Robert Redford when in 1949 she lured a major league ballplayer she'd never met into a hotel room with cryptic note and shot him, nearly killing him.

After the headlines faded, Ruth Ann Steinhagen did something else just as surprising: She disappeared into obscurity, living a quiet life unnoticed in Chicago until now, more than a half century later, when news broke that she had died three months earlier.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Friday that Steinhagen passed away of natural causes on Dec. 29, at the age of 83. First reported by the Chicago Tribune last week, her identity was a surprise even to the morgue employees who knew about the 1984 movie "The Natural," in which she was portrayed by actress Barbara Hershey.

"She chose to live in the shadows and she did a good job of it," John Theodore, an author who wrote a 2002 nonfiction book about the crime, wrote in an email Sunday.

The story, with its elements of obsession, mystery, insanity and a baseball star, made it part of both Chicago's colorful crime history and rich baseball lore.

The story began with what appeared to be just another young woman's crush on Eddie Waittkus, the Chicago Cubs' handsome first baseman. So complete was this crush that the teenager set a place for Waitkus, whom she'd never met, at the family dinner table. She turned her bedroom into a shrine to him, and put his photo under her pillow.

After the 1948 season, Waitkus was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies -- a fateful turn. "When he went to the Phillies, that's when she decided to kill him," Theodore said in an interview.

Steinhagen had her chance the next season, when the Phillies came to Chicago to play the Cubs at Wrigley Field. She checked into a room at the Edgewater Beach Hotel where he was staying and invited him to her room.

AP

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Eddie Waitkus acknowledges the applause of fans at Shibe Park as he stands by gifts showered on him on "Eddie Waitkus Night" in Philadelphia in 1949. Waitkus was in uniform for the first time since he was shot, June 14, 1949, in a Chicago hotel by 19-year-old Ruth Steinhagen.

"We're not acquainted, but I have something of importance to speak to you about," she wrote in a note to him after a game at Wrigley on June 14, 1949.

It worked. Waitkus arrived at her room. After he sat down, Steinhagen walked to a closet, said, "I have a surprise for you," then turned with the rifle she had hidden there and shot him in the chest. Theodore wrote that she then knelt by his side and held his hand on her lap. She told a psychiatrist afterward about how she had dreamed of killing him and found it strange that she was now "holding him in my arms."

Newspapers devoured and trumpeted the lurid story of a 19-year-old baseball groupie, known in the parlance of the day as a "Baseball Annie." Among the sensational and probably staged photos was one showing Steinhagen writing in her journal at a table in her jail cell with a framed photograph of Waitkus propped nearby.

A judge determined she was insane and committed her to a mental hospital. She was released three years later, after doctors determined she had regained her sanity.

Details about the rest of her life are sketchy. She lived with her sister in a house just a few miles from the hotel where she shot Waitkus. A neighbor told Theodore that Steinhagen said she worked in an office for 35 years but never revealed her employer. And she made an effort to conceal her privacy, often refusing to answer the phone or come to the door when Theodore knocked.

Chris Gentner, a neighbor who used to help the Steinhagen sisters with chores, said he only found out who she was 15 years after they began living nearby.

"I found out through my ex-wife - I'm not sure how she found out - and I looked (Steinhagen) up online. And as soon as I saw (her photograph) online I said, 'That's her,"' Gentner said.

The 1984 movie was based on a novel by Bernard Malamud that was inspired by the story. Theodore's 2002 book was entitled "Baseball's Natural: The story of Eddie Waitkus."

Waitkus, who played the season after he was shot, helping the Phillies win the National League pennant, decided not to press charges in 1952 when Steinhagen was deemed sane. The trial would have likely made banner headlines -- particularly since Malamud's novel was released in 1952 - so Watikus' decision almost certainly assisted Steinhagen's disappearance into obscurity.

He died in 1972, 12 years before Redford portrayed Roy Hobbs, the character inspired by Waitkus.

"He hardly ever talked to his family about Ruth," Theodore said.

Ocean plankton sponge up nearly twice the carbon currently assumed

Mar. 17, 2013 ? Models of carbon dioxide in the world's oceans need to be revised, according to new work by UC Irvine and other scientists published online Sunday in Nature Geoscience. Trillions of plankton near the surface of warm waters are far more carbon-rich than has long been thought, they found. Global marine temperature fluctuations could mean that tiny Prochlorococcus and other microbes digest double the carbon previously calculated. Carbon dioxide is the leading driver of disruptive climate change.

In making their findings, the researchers have upended a decades-old core principle of marine science known as the Redfield ratio, named for famed oceanographer Alfred Redfield. He concluded in 1934 that from the top of the world's oceans to their cool, dark depths, both plankton and the materials they excrete contain the same ratio (106:16:1) of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus.

But as any gardener who has done a soil test knows, amounts of those elements can vary widely. The new study's authors found dramatically different ratios at a variety of marine locations. What matters more than depth, they concluded, is latitude. In particular, the researchers detected far higher levels of carbon in warm, nutrient-starved areas (195:28:1) near the equator than in cold, nutrient-rich polar zones (78:13:1).

"The Redfield concept remains a central tenet in ocean biology and chemistry. However, we clearly show that the nutrient content ratio in plankton is not constant and thus reject this longstanding central theory for ocean science," said lead author Adam Martiny, associate professor of Earth system science and ecology & evolutionary biology at UC Irvine. "Instead, we show that plankton follow a strong latitudinal pattern."

He and fellow investigators made seven expeditions to gather big jars of water from the frigid Bering Sea, the North Atlantic near Denmark, mild Caribbean waters and elsewhere. They used a sophisticated $1 million cell sorter aboard the research vessel to analyze samples at the molecular level. They also compared their data to published results from 18 other marine voyages.

Martiny noted that since Redfield first announced his findings, "there have been people over time putting out a flag, saying, 'Hey, wait a minute.'" But for the most part, Redfield's ratio of constant elements is a staple of textbooks and research. In recent years, Martiny said, "a couple of models have suggested otherwise, but they were purely models. This is really the first time it's been shown with observation. That's why it's so important."

Pa. college lacrosse team's bus crashes, killing 2

CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) ? A tour bus carrying a college's women's lacrosse team to a game went off the Pennsylvania Turnpike on Saturday and crashed into a tree, killing the driver and one passenger and sending others to hospitals, including some with serious injuries, authorities said.

Lacrosse players from Seton Hill University and three coaches were among the 23 people aboard when the bus crashed at about 9 a.m., turnpike spokeswoman Renee Colborn said. It's not clear what caused the crash, but state police were investigating, said Megan Silverstram of the Cumberland County public safety department.

Three of the injured were flown by helicopter to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where one person died, hospital spokeswoman Danielle Ran said. She did not give the conditions of the other two. Officials said all other passengers were taken to hospitals as a precaution.

The bus came to a stop upright on the side of the road with part of its left side shorn off, photos from the scene showed, though it's unclear whether that was from the impact or rescue operation.

The bus operator, Mlaker Charter & Tours, of Davidsville, Pa., sent investigators to the scene, company dispatcher Kelly Hay said. The company had no information yet from the investigators and could not comment, she said.

State environmental officials were also sent to the scene because of a diesel fuel spill from the bus.

Seton Hill is a Catholic school of about 2,500 students near Pittsburgh. The team was to play Saturday afternoon at Millersville University, about 50 miles from the crash site in central Pennsylvania.
