Video: Medal of Honor recipient: My job was to look out for my brothers

>>> countless acts of heroism by troops, some recognized, some forgotten. but no recognition is higher than the medal of honor just 3,400 brave certificaservice members have been awarded the prestigious medal since 1861 , too many of them awarded posthumously. sal giunta is the first living since the veietnam war, honored for his actions during a 2007 ambush in afghanistan. he stopped insurgents from carrying off a wounded u.s. soldier and effectively brought the fight to a halt. he describes the harrowing experience in a new book "living with honor." sal giunta, good morning. great to have you here.

>> good morning.

>> we can't say it enough. thank you for your service. this is the highest military honor. in reading your account and talking to other recipients, nobody steps out to get this medal when you join the military.

>> oh, absolutely not. i joined the military to serve my country. i don't think to receive the medal of honor means there were a lot of bad things that happened and not necessarily to yourself but those around you that you truly care about and something you don't ever seek out or want at all.

>> in this book you described that kind of action. it happened october 27, 2007 . you're ambushed. i mean, close in ambushed, well coordinated, a ferocious firefight erupts in the chaos. you are hit twas with your body armor and your gear stopped the bullets. but you charge the enemy line and you went after one of your comrades and you saw him being carried away by the insurgents and stopped them. we see this as an act of heroism. when you go back and think about that day, was it autopilot? were you thinking heroic action at the moment?

>> absolutely not,s i wasn't thinking heroic action. it's what we expect out of our men and women in uniform every day to make the hard decisions and it's what we train so we don't have to think about it. it becomes second nature to us. my only job at that time was in the military was being an infantryman in combat doing what our government asked us and looking out to the left and to the right as they looked out for me when i was on their left or right.

>> a lot of heroism that day, wasn't there?

>> absolutely. i was not the only one there and i did not do the most or give the most. two men lost their lives that day.

>> it reads in part, despite bullets impacting on and around himself specialist giunta fearlessly advanced on the enemy and proep vided aid to his fall ep comrades. his actions saved the lives of multiple paratroopers and changed the course of the battle in his platoon forever. when you first learned your name was being put up the ladder for consideration for a medal of hohn aror, you were almost angry, weren't you.

>> i was pretty angry. it's safe to say i was angry. the things that happened that day and the amount of sacrifices made by so many, are it was not a good day for the united states military . it was not a good day for the 173rd. we were attacked and we lost people that we can never get back. and to be awarded or patted on the back or congratulate d for something that was no more than what everyone else around me did seems ridiculous.

>> in fact, john, one of your fellow soldiers who had been -- was the one being carried away by the insurgents, he was badly wounded and you were tend iing to his wounds and i know he died as a result of that firefight.

>> josh brennan was the soldier being carried away and he did die. ultimately i went to fight next to my brother, i went to see where i could help or so we could at least fight together. what i came upon was not what i expe expected but we react.

>> another member of the team, your medic, was killed as well in that firefight. i have to ask you quickly, we led off with another ferocious insurgent attack in jalalabad, this time a suicide attack . as you watch five years later the u.s. still fighting, what are your thoughts about whether this job will ever get done?

>> i think the job gets done every single day, day in and day out. it's not the soldier or the air men or the ma republirinesmarines' job, we have a set objective every day, every moment for our term that we're there and we have been completing it for the last 11 years and we will continue to complete it for however long this may last. it's what we as a country wanted to find as our goal, that we want our men and women to achieve.

>> well, we salute you certainly for the honor that you received deservingly. a lot of heroes out there and we salute them as well and thank all of you for your service. retired staff sergeant sal giunta. "living with honor."

Genome-scale study identifies hundreds of potential drug targets for Huntington's disease

Genome-scale study identifies hundreds of potential drug targets for Huntington's disease

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Scientists searching for ways to develop treatments for Huntington's disease (HD) just got a roadmap that could dramatically speed their discovery process. Researchers at the Buck Institute have used RNA interference (RNAi) technology to identify hundreds of "druggable" molecular targets linked to the toxicity associated with the devastating, ultimately fatal disease. The results from this unprecedented genome-scale screen in a human cell model of HD are published in the November 29, 2012 edition of PLOS Genetics. The work was is a collaboration between Buck Institute faculty members Robert E. Hughes, Ph.D., Sean Mooney, Ph.D., Lisa Ellerby, Ph.D. and Juan Botas, Ph.D. at the Baylor College of Medicine.

HD is a devastating and incurable progressive neurodegenerative genetic disorder that affects motor coordination and leads to severe physical and cognitive decline. Currently, there are about 30,000 people in North America diagnosed with HD and another 150,000 people at risk for developing the disease. The disease pathology stems from a mutation in the huntingtin gene (HTT), resulting in the accumulation of a toxic protein leading to neuronal cell death and systemic dysfunction. Buck Scientists screened more than 7,800 genes pre-selected as potential drug targets to identify modifiers of HD toxicity in human cells, using technology that silences specific genes prior to analysis.

Lead author Robert Hughes said that among the diverse range of modifiers identified, this study showed that RRAS, a gene involved in cell motility and neuronal development, is a potent modulator of HD toxicity in multiple HD models. "Our data indicates that the pathogenic effects of the HTT mutation on this pathway can be corrected at multiple intervention points and that pharmacological manipulation of RRAS signaling may confer therapeutic benefit in HD," Hughes said. Follow up work on the RRAS pathway is now underway in the Hughes lab and in the lab of Buck faculty member Lisa M. Ellerby, PhD.

Hughes said many molecular hits identified in the screening were validated in human cell, mouse cell and fruit fly models of HD ? and that all the data from the study will be available to the public. "Our hope is that HD researchers will look at these targets and find modifiers relevant to the areas they already work on," said Hughes. "Ideally, pharmaceutical companies already working on some these pathways could build on their current knowledge and expertise by focusing their attention on the challenge to develop therapies for HD."

Kidney Disease in Cats and Organic Pet Food ? Dr Ernie Ward ...

I love helping pet parents provide the best care for their furry family members. I?d like to share two recent questions on veterinary topics I encounter frequently. The first deals with a common condition in older cats, chronic kidney disease, and the second concerns confusing food labels and the value of organic dog and cat foods.

Q: ?My older cat has kidney disease and my vet wants me to feed her a special diet she doesn?t particularly care for. Does she need a special diet? What can I do if she won?t eat it??

Kidney disease is a common problem in older cats affecting approximately 35% of all felines during their lifetime. The causes of kidney disease can vary, but for many cats a genetic root to blame. In addition, diet plays a major role both in the development and treatment of kidney disease. It?s important to note that protein digestibility decreases as a cat ages, requiring older cats to consume more protein to remain healthy. This is one of the key reasons I advocate higher protein, lower carbohydrate diets for cats.

If kidney disease develops, this causes further protein loss. There was a time when veterinarians recommended very low protein diets for older cats with kidney disease. That advice has been challenged over the past 10 to 15 years. Current research supports feeding cats with chronic kidney disease an optimal protein diet as opposed to protein-restricted in the majority of cases. The dietary focus should be on lowering phosphorus and sodium (salt) levels. There are several specially formulated diets for cats that may help slow the progression of kidney disease and potentially improve or reduce associated symptoms. The good news is these diets are now available in many varieties and flavors. Gone are the days of ?the one-and-only feline kidney diet.? ?If your cat has chronic kidney disease, try several to see which it prefers.? Many cat owners find they need to rotate different diets over time to keep it ?fresh? for their kitty. Just don?t skimp on the protein unless your veterinarian specifically advises it.

Q: ?I try to eat a healthy, organic diet. I want to feed as natural and organic a food as possible for my dog. I?m very confused by what I read about ?natural? and ?organic? pet foods. What?s the scoop??

Pet food labels can be confusing and intimidating to read. Besides all the manipulative marketing and fine print, there are weak regulations concerning the use of terms ?natural? and ?organic? on pet foods.? Currently the agencies in charge of this issue have been unable to reach consensus on how to appropriately define and apply ?organic? on pet foods. Until those regulations are agreed upon, the rules for human organics are in use. If you see the USDA organic seal, that food, human or pet, must be made of at least 95% organic ingredients. That?s as good as we can get regarding ?organic? at this time.

Beware the term ?natural? on certain pet foods. ?Natural? is often misleading and its regulations are relatively easy to manipulate. My best advice is to investigate the manufacturer and talk with your vet. Carefully read labels, visit websites, even call and talk to the pet food company. Key questions to ask include: How are the ingredients grown and processed? How are the meat sources obtained?? What quality control and testing procedures do you use? Better ingredients and better foods may cost a little more. Your pet?s health is worth it. Bottom line: Feed the best food you can afford and one that supports your beliefs.

S.Africa's rand hits two-week high on fiscal cliff optimism

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's rand rallied to a two-week high on Thursday on hopes that U.S. policymakers would reach an agreement to reduce the debt pile of the world's biggest economy.

The rand was at 8.7690 to the dollar at 1550 GMT on Thursday, 0.5 percent stronger than Wednesday's New York close, after reaching a high of 8.7470 earlier in the session.

The currency has traded within a narrow 8.80-9.00 band in the last two weeks and failed to break free even after a deal on Monday by Greece's international lenders to reduce the country's debt.

Hopes that President Barack Obama's administration and Congressional leaders would reach a deal to avert the "fiscal cliff" before the January 1 deadline lifted world equities and commodities on Thursday, as well as the rand.

"International sentiment is good surrounding the ability for the fiscal cliff to be resolved," said one trader. "Unless we have bad news surrounding the negotiations around the fiscal cliff I think we can probably strengthen a bit further."

South African producer inflation rose to 5.2 percent year-on-year in October, from 4.2 percent in September, Statistics South Africa said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters forecast a rise to 4.8 percent.

Government bonds were firmer, with the yield on the 2026 instrument declining 2 basis points to 7.565 percent and that on the 2015 paper falling 1.5 basis points to 5.47 percent.

Caviar vending machines pop up at L.A. malls

12 hrs.

Craving caviar in Los Angeles? There?s a vending machine for that.

Head to three local malls???Westfield Century City, Westfield Topanga and Burbank Town Center ? and you?ll see one of the brand new machines dispensing the prized roe, as well as truffles, escargot and mother-of-pearl spoons.

Prices start at $5, going all the way up to $500, which will get you one ounce of Imperial River Beluga Caviar.

The project is the brainchild of Kelly Stern, who co-owns Beverly Hills Caviar ? a gourmet food supplier located in the tony California community.?

The business plan: Reach customers in wealthy neighborhoods surrounding the malls who may not have convenient access to caviar and expose everyday shoppers to the delicacy, especially younger ones.

?All my friends and family knew about this for a year-and-a-half and no one wanted to tell me that I was crazy, but I could see it in their eyes,? Stern said.

?I did not know what was going to happen when people saw it.?

Stern shopped around the world to find the right kind of vending machine ? it had to keep the caviar cold, have a touch screen, an Internet connection and an attractive display for its gourmet contents. It also had to accept credit cards as well as cash.

She ended up buying parts from seven different countries and putting everything together in Los Angeles. Each machine costs about $85,000???including hardware, software, security and maintenance ? and has about $50,000 worth of inventory inside. The caviar is sold in jars and stays fresh for about a year.

Stern wants to franchise the business to ?every single city in America and the world? when she has more experience with the machines, which she describes as experimental. Stern says no one has ever thought of caviar as a turnkey enterprise, something she wants to change.

?A lot of the people that sell caviar now are old people. They are a dying species and they don?t cater to the young people at all,? Stern said.

?So I?m seeing all the teenagers that stop by as my future assets. They will grow up and become the president of the U.S. or the president of Microsoft and they will think about caviar. They will remember that they went into the mall and saw the machine and that?s where they are going to buy their caviar.?

The project has attracted lots of attention since the machines were unveiled on last week on?Black Friday, prompting Stern to hire a publicist???not to promote the venture, but to manage the curiosity it has sparked.

Industry observers, however, were skeptical whether the business model would be a success.

?It?s interesting, it?s a conversation starter and it?s a marketing tool? (but) I don?t think it?s going to sweep the nation,? said Tim Sanford, editor-in-chief of ?Vending Times,? adding that his staff chuckled when they heard of the concept.

?My guess is that most people who want caviar know how to get it.?

Vending machines often put?much-desired products in high-traffic areas where they can be sold swiftly to people who are there for some other purpose, so the caviar angle sounds more like a way to generate buzz, Sanford said.

But Stern projects she will recoup her money in the next few months, especially with the help of the holidays and awards season in Los Angeles.

?Everybody is talking about it. This is a dream come true,? she said.

One father's quest against the misogynistic underbelly of the gaming ...

One father?s quest against the misogynistic underbelly of the gaming?community

When it got out that Mike Hoye altered the code in the Legend of Zelda game The Wind Waker?to change protagonist Link?s masculine pronouns to feminine ones, he didn?t receive as many death?threats as he thought he would.

?But not none,? he adds. His family and his three-year-old daughter specifically have been?threatened as a result of his decision to do something to make his daughter feel less alienated by a?game.

Women are still generally regarded as ?the other? in the video game community. Sites like?Fat, Ugly, or Slutty?and? Not In?The Kitchen Anymore chronicle the misogynistic abuse women have to deal with when they engage?in their hobby online. Games are usually marketed to men with male protagonists, and women are?NPCs ? non-player characters ? or exist only for eye candy.

?Since I have a daughter growing up who seems to like Dad?s hobbies, I thought there was a?small thing that I could do about that,? Hoye says. When his daughter played the game, she started?identifying with Link as being herself ? she was the one who was saving people and fighting monsters.

He started out reading the dialogue and changing the pronouns as he went, but wanted to make it?easier on himself and for his daughter, since she was reaching reading age. He decided to go in and?change the code itself.

?I?ve been working with computers for a long time and you don?t usually stay in this career for?very long unless you can get obsessive about stuff like this,? he says.

Eventually he succeeded and put?the code up on his personal blog. After that, it took off. The story was reposted in various places,?picked up by Reddit, and then started appearing on sites like Kotaku and Hack a Day. The response to?the story has been polarizing: Hoye says he gets people calling him dad of the year, but there are also?the people who threaten his family.

?The pushback I?ve gotten about this has been remarkable,? he says. It?s not the first time that?there?s been an extreme negative reaction to people who want to change video games ? particularly?changes regarding women?s involvement or depiction. When Anita Sarkeesian started a?Kickstarter page?for a planned video series about women in video games, she received death threats, there was an?organized attempt to get her Kickstarter page taken down, her Wikipedia page was vandalized, and one?person created a game where the point was to punch her face until the screen went red. When?BioWare writer Jennifer Hepler said that she didn?t play video games and that games should have an?option to skip combat, she was also at the centre of a ?vitriolic?backlash. She was called a cunt, a whore,?and a bitch ? insults that are exclusively reserved for women.

But Hoye is fighting back against this hostility to women in the video game community.

?I did not expect this to take off the way it did. Since it has, I have been trying to use this as a?platform to make more people aware of the situation and I guess ultimately to show this is something?that maybe we can change and that we need to change.?
